A $5 million privately funded treetop walk is planned for River's Edge Park in Council Bluffs. Thanks to the generosity of local philanthropists and lead donors Ty and Linda Borman, the treetop walk offers a unique and immersive experience, bringing nature enthusiasts, families, and adventure seekers together to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors.
Southwest Iowa Nonprofit for Collective Impact (SINC) is conducting the fundraising and management for River's Edge Phase Four in partnership with the City of Council Bluffs.
Starting at the foot of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, the treetop walk's elevated pathways wind through the park's north side, offering visitors a bird's-eye view of the Missouri River and the Omaha skyline. The half-mile-long loop includes educational components, promoting environmental awareness and appreciation for the region's biodiversity. The walkway will be built at levee height and connect to the MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower, a 138-foot tall observation tower with an adventure course including a 50' climbing wall.
All of the River's Edge Park north amenities, including the treetop walk, will be built above the flood zone, at the levee system's elevation, to allow opportunities for use when the Missouri River levels fluctuate. All structures will be supported by piles driven to bedrock and designed for flood conditions, including the potential impacts from ice.
Plans for River's Edge Phase Four include the MidAmerican Adventure Tower, a pier, a dog park, and playgrounds. The estimated budget is $50 million, and the Iowa West Foundation has provided the lead gift of $15 million.
"River's Edge continues to be a prime example of a successful public/ private partnership," said Mayor Walsh. “Thanks to SINC, River's Edge Phase Four is funded entirely by private donations; tax increases are not part of the funding plan. We thank SINC, the Iowa West Foundation, the Borman Family, MidAmerican Energy, and our other partners in the private sector for their commitment to Council Bluffs.
