We usually open up applications for sworn Police Officers three times per year: in the spring, summer, and fall. For information regarding current openings, please visit the Employment Opportunities page. If we are not taking applications, you may register to be notified of openings when the application process begins again.

Workout with CBPD

During hiring periods, we have designated days when individuals applying to become a Police Officer can get fit with us. We welcome all candidates to come to work out with CBPD Officers before taking the Physical Agility Test. Click here to learn more and sign up. Hope to see you there! 

Academy Requirements

Previously Uncertified

When the Council Bluffs Police Department hires new recruits, they must complete 16 weeks of basic police academy training at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). Those who complete basic training are "certified" as Iowa Law Enforcement Officers.

Previously Certified

Recruits certified in any state with a reciprocal agreement with ILEA may test out of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.  See ILEA's requirements for out-of-state officers for more information.
