Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention
Juvenile fire setting impacts a community in many ways. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1998, it was estimated that fires set by children resulted in:

  • Injuries - 3000 injuries
  • Fatalities –300 deaths
  • Property Loss - $300,000,000 in property damage

Child fire starting is the leading cause of fire deaths among preschoolers. Children start almost 42% of fires that kill children 5 and under.

In effort to reduce the number of fire injuries and deaths, Council Bluffs Fire Department will provide education, and redirection assistance to children who exhibit fire setting behaviors and their families seeking help.

The education program is for those age 17 and younger teaches the power of fire, consequences of playing with fire, fire prevention and how to survive a fire. The Council Bluffs Fire Department follows the State of Iowa Juvenile Fire Intervention Program.
