Assessments of children attending licensed child care centers or elementary or secondary school are conducted to ensure attendees have received the required immunizations and have an appropriate Iowa Department of Public Health Certificate of Immunization, Certificate of Immunization Exemption, or Provisional Certificate of Immunization. Per the Iowa Code, Public Health Nurses and Sanitarians conduct annual audits of immunization records for students enrolled in licensed childcare centers and public, private, and parochial students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The goal of auditing immunization records is to aid in the successful outcome of any communicable disease outbreak. Updated immunization records aided the epidemiological investigation team in disseminating information needed to ensure the health and safety of other children and workers/teachers. Accurate records enable the investigation team to readily identify those children and workers at risk.
