Offers of Employment

If you have qualified for a vacant position and are offered a job, the job offer will likely be a conditional offer based on your successful completion of one or more of the following:
  • Being certified eligible for employment by the Civil Service Commission
  • Passing a background investigation to the satisfaction of the city
  • Passing a job-related physical or medical exam related to the job you will be performing
  • Providing the city with a certified transcript of your education
  • Passing a pre-employment drug screening if your position is covered under the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Residency Requirements

Civil service employees are no longer required to live in Iowa. Additional mileage restrictions may apply to employment as a police officer or firefighter.

Probationary Period

All employees serve at least a six-month probationary period; the probationary period for police and fire is longer, based on state law. Probationary employees may be terminated without recourse.

New Employee Orientation

On your first day of employment you will complete all new-hire forms required. You must bring identification that proves you have a right to work in the United States. There are several ways to provide this information as listed on the Federal I-9 Form. Please also bring a voided check if you have one to set up direct deposit of your paycheck.

New employees receive information on policies and benefits during this orientation. Enrollment in group insurance programs for which the employee is eligible is also done at this time.
